Waltz with Bashir Animation Director to Present at Flash on Tap!

April 13th, 2009

Yoni Goodman the Director of Animation for Waltz with Bashir will present at Flash on Tap. He worked with Director, Ari Goldman, and Art Director, David Polonsky, to create the award-winning and critically acclaimed animated documentary that deals with the Israeli Army’s mission in the 1982 Lebanon War, highlighted by animated interviews with those who took part.

Waltz with Bashir was initially created as a real video based on a 90-page script. It was then shot in a sound studio and cut as a 90-minute length video film. From there the directors story-boarded the feature so that it could then be translated into 2300 illustrations used to create the animation. The animation format, invented by Goodman, is a unique combination of Flash animation, classic animation and 3D.

Goodman is going to talk about his role and work on the film, including the creation of its unique Flash-cutout technique. We’ll also be screening the film–so you’ll get a chance to hear about how it was created and see the movie. Bring your own popcorn!

Peek Under the Hood at Big Spaceship’s Process

January 21st, 2009

Conferences are only as good as the people speaking and presenting at them. So Flash on Tap is lucky (and smart enough) to have attracted a stellar line up of speakers. We got a sneak peek at Big Spaceship recently in New York City. As you probably know Big Spaceship is a digital creative agency who has mastered the process of telling stories and starting conversations in the digital world. Their skills have helped them win nearly every creative advertising award possible. The firm started in 2000 in Brooklyn—the current hotbed of creativity in NYC—producing websites for Miramax movies. They quickly built a following in the movie industry for producing effective sites.

What makes Big Spaceship so effective, and listening to them share their story, so inspiring is that they’re focused on the digital world but aren’t beholden to it. Most impressive was the balance of technology and craft exhibited in all the pieces Michael Liebowitz and Joshua Hirsch shared. It wasn’t enough to figure out how to make something work it was equally important to “make” that something. One example is their own trailer made from paper in stop action with lots old school features and techniques. It’s sweet! And screams craft (in a good way).

Big Spaceship was also quite clear about their motivation—we want to have fun. Because having fun is what drives their passion and when they are passionate about what they are doing they produce great quality work. In the end, fun leads to quality and for Big Spaceship, success.

At Flash on Tap Jamie Kosoy, Associate Technical Director, is going to give you a look at how they collaborate simultaneously to create all those award-winning projects. Don’t miss this chance to peek under the hood of this stellar firm’s process and maybe learn something new!

Cheers!

All are welcome!

January 16th, 2009

We’ve had a few questions from attendees asking if they need special Flash skills to attend the conference. So, we wanted to make sure that we let everyone know that Flash on Tap is geared toward Flashers of all levels!

Some of the stuff is very introductory in nature. Chuck Freedman’s talk is all about how he got started in the Flash industry. Grant Skinner is offering a presentation on beginning Flash coding, where he’ll cover some essential techniques to becoming proficient that aren’t taught in books. Others like Craig Swann, GMUNK and Mario Klingemann are doing inspirational sessions that should get creative juices flowing for all levels of designers and developers.

In addition, the conference is all about facilitating networking, so beginners can talk to the experts to find out how they got started. And, since there will be many interactive agencies and other Flash-based organizations present–especially at the Career and Recruiting Fair which takes place on the first day–there will be lots of chances to find out about new job opportunities.

Cheers!!

New Dates for Flash on Tap

September 15th, 2008

As many people have already heard by now, we’ve moved the dates to the May 28 - 30, 2009. So far everyone has been positive about the change.

We’ve listened to folks about the issues with the first set of dates and made some adjustments. We will be able to bring in more craft brewers that were previously occupied with the Great American Beer Festival in Denver.  Since a week day conference involving beer was difficult to juggle with people’s work schedule, the conference is now on a weekend . Some of the speakers that we wanted to book the first time around are now able to make it in May.

We sincerely thank all of you that have already bought tickets, and to all of our sponsors that are sticking with us. Super-early bird specials are now back on sale! Stay tuned for new speakers being announced soon!

Opposites Attract

July 31st, 2008

Marriage. A union of two lives who by coming together create a synergy far greater than the sum of its parts.  Sometimes it’s surprising how that relationship came to be and mystifying why they go so well together – a perfect fit. That’s how we felt when we conceived Flash on Tap.

Marrying the Flash community and the love of craft beer seemed like a perfect yet surprising fit. No one else has done it and it adds an additional component of fun and knowledge to learning about Flash. It also supports and extends the very nature of the Flash community–knowledge, passion, and respect–which also drives the art of brewing and enjoying craft beers.

Flash on Tap came together through the vision of a core team from Infrared5, Influxis and Red5Server. Our goal–to raise the bar for Flash designers and developers with an opportunity to learn and experience new things both inside and outside our core community. We are purposefully blurring the lines between business and pleasure because we all believe that business should be a pleasure.

We hope you’ll join us October 7-9 in Boston at The Castle. Don’t forget a limited number of 100 super-early bird registrations are available on a first-come, first-served basis–don’t delay, register today!
